The Arts Council offers a variety of art and acting classes and camps throughout the year for children and adults. Check this page often to stay up to date on all of our classes and camps!

All classes are located at the Powerhouse unless otherwise indicated.

Adult Classes

A Gentle Introduction to Watercolor for New and Returning Participants

Dates: Mondays, March 13th, 20th, 27th, April 3rd & 10th

Are you a bit afraid of attempting watercolors? This relaxed evening workshop may be for you!

We will explore the fluid nature of watercolor by engaging smaller scale sketchbook-size projects. We will play with color harmonies, create lush "wet-on-wet" forms with soft washes, try transparent "glazes" that seem like stained glass, experiment with color charged background space, create miniature watercolor landscapes and seascapes, and learn to choose creative watercolor projects that bring out the best of your individual abilities and interests.

Watercolor for the Absolute Beginner, Part 2

Dates: Wednesdays, March 22nd, 29th, April 5th 12th, 19th, and 26th
Times: 9 to 11:30 am

Continue to experiment with the watercolor medium in this follow up class for the Absolute Beginner. Exercises include rocks, trees, skies, and more. A lesson in perspective drawing will be covered as we finish the 6 week course with a finished painting. Supplies provided.

Studio Whimzy Spring Classes

Dates: Mondays, March 27th, April 3rd, 10th and 17th
Times: 6:00-8:30 pm

Come learn how to paint Oxford scenes with Sarah Kathryn Dossett of Studio Whimzy. The class fee includes all painting supplies, instruction, food and drinks.

Prices: YAC members $55 per class. Non-members $60 per class.

Fine Art Animation Workshop: Stop Motion Animation

Fine Art Animation: Stop Motion Workshop

Lighting and creating artwork suitable for frame by frame animation will be covered. Time will be given for students to create silhouette or transparency artwork intended for a collaborative stop motion animation in class using a light table. A camera, iStopMotion software, and QuickTime Pro software will be used to capture and edit the student animation.  By signing up for this class, students will be given a one on one session with the instructor dealing with their own stop motion projects at her office in The Edison, located right next door to the Powerhouse (specifics to be discussed in class).

Ideal students would be anyone between the ages of 13 and older who have a general interest in the class topics. This could be your first art class or you can be a well seasoned artist or anything in between.

Electronics for Artists Workshops: LED Workshop and Motors Workshop

Electronics for Artists: Motors Workshop
Dates:

This class will cover basic circuit building with an emphasis on Motors. Each student will receive their own electronics kit ($15 value) to be used in the classroom and to take home. Time and materials will be given in class for students to create an initial prototype for an art piece involving LEDs.

Fabulous Friday Art Camp

Dates: April 14th

This art camp is for children ages 3 to 10 who are off from school for the day. We will do various art projects and watch an afternoon movie right after lunch. Children will need to pack a lunch if they are staying for the full day.

Beginning (ages 3-6) and intermediate (ages 7-10) students will sit  and work together.

Prices: Full day - $40 Half day - $25

Marvelous Monday Art Camp

Dates: April 17th
Times: 9-12 or 9-5
Ages: 3-10

This art camp is for children ages 3 to 10 who are off from school for the day. We will do various art projects and watch an afternoon movie right after lunch. Children will need to pack a lunch if they are staying for the full day.

Early Bird Art Camp

The children in these camps will explore lots of different art techniques and materials, will participate in daily art challenges, games and crafts projects and have a movie break each day after lunch. Children will be provided with snacks but will need to bring a lunch if they are full day.

Please note that because of the wide range of ages in this class, students will be grouped in two classes for projects to insure success and common interest. Ages 3-7 will be in one group and Ages 8-10 will be in another. They will eat lunch, snacks and watch movies together.

Prices: YAC Members $100/170 half day/full day. Non-members $115/$185 half day/full day.

Registration Policy:

Payment is due at time of registration. If not received by 2 weeks before the class begins, your name will be taken off the list to allow for people on the waiting list to get in. Also, refunds will not be made for cancellations made 7 or less days before the class starts, but you will get a credit for a future class depending on availability in that class. There will also be a $15 administration charge per child if you need to switch the week your child attends class, and the switch will be made only if there is availability for another class. Switches cannot be done past a week before the scheduled start date.

Acting Classes

Spring Play

Students in this Oxford Acting Studio class will audition for, rehearse for, and perform a play.

Ages: Open to students of all ages who've taken an Oxford Acting Studio class in the past.

Students will audition for, rehearse for, and perform a play.

Sewing Classes

Learning to Sew for Kids! Level 2

Dates: Mondays, March 6th, 20th, 27th, and April 3rd
(no class March 13th - Spring Break)
Times: 4-5:30 pm
Ages: 8-up
Instructor: Andi Bedsworth

Children will continue to master basic sewing skills and learn some new ones to add to their knowledge. We will work on more detailed projects including cutting out and using a simple commercial pattern. This class is for students ages 8 and up who can thread their machines independently and are comfortable with basic straight stitching on  the machine.  

Prices: $80 for members and $95 for non-members

Supplies and machine not included in price. All students must bring a sewing machine, and a supply list will be emailed to registrants before class begins.

Learning to Sew for Kids! Level 3

Dates: Mondays, April 10th, 24th, May 1st, and 8th
(no class April 17th - Easter Break)
Times: 4-5:30 pm
Ages: 8-up
Instructor: Andi Bedsworth

Children will add to their sewing knowledge by making a little binder of sewing samples as well as working on simple projects to reinforce skills. Techniques learned and mastered will include bias binding, gathering stitches, french seams, and more. This class is for students ages 8 and up who can thread their machines independently and are comfortable with basic straight stitching on  the machine.  

Prices: $80 for members and $95 for non-members

Supplies and machine not included in price. All students must bring a sewing machine, and a supply list will be emailed to registrants before class begins.

Fiber Art Camp for Adults & Teachers

Dates: June 12th-16th
Times: 1-5 pm

This week workshop is geared for adults and teachers wanting to explore simple fiber arts projects. Teachers will get special tips on how to incorporate simple fiber art lessons into the classroom and non-teachers will enjoy getting to play and experiment with different fiber techniques in a relaxing and fun atmosphere.

We will do basic weaving on cardboard looms, cup weaving, dyeing, and simple hand sewing projects that can be used in the class or to inspire you to begin a new hobby.

Prices: YAC Members $100  
Non-members $115

CEU fees are $20 and will be collected via a separate check to the University of Mississippi to be paid on the first day of class. Class provides 2 CEUS.

Mixed Media Art Camp for Adults & Teachers

Another fun week workshop dedicated to adults and teachers. This week will focus on mixed media collage, painting, journaling, and drawing projects many of which can be adapted to classroom use.

Special tips for teachers on how to incorporate into class lessons and for adults wanting to get hands-on practice in mixed media techniques.

This fun week will be themed around drawing, painting, sculpting and making animals of all types. Children will learn how to use different media to create furry, scaly and feathery animals sure to make them and you smile. Full day children need to bring a lunch and an afternoon movie (animal themed) will help break up the day.

Please note that because of the wide range of ages in this class, students will be grouped in two classes for projects to insure success and common interest. Ages 3-7 will be in one group and Ages 8-12 will be in another. They will eat lunch, snacks and watch movies together.

Doodle, Sketch and Draw Camp

American Folk Art Camp

For those children who need something fun to do during the holiday break! We will explore folk art with an American slant- Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Art, southern folk art and more will be introduced. Full day children need to bring a lunch and a movie will be shown to break up the day.

Storybook Art Camp

Dates: July 10th-14th

A fun week inspired by books, illustrators and authors. Students will create their own short stories with pictures and also create many projects in the style of and inspired by various author/illustrators.

Beginning Sewing Camp

Dates: July 10th-14th

A week workshop designed to teach beginners how to sew on the machine as well as some basic hand sewing skills. Students must bring their own machine and supplies. List will be provided at registration.

This or past sewing class required for Fashion Runway Camp.

Art to Sew - Fashion Runway Camp

Dates: July 17th-21st

This special offering will introduce children to the world of sewing garments and will end with a fashion show for parents on the last day of class. Students will learn how to use a commercial pattern, make style choices, and create a garment or outfit from a few selected pattern choices. The days will be broken up with snack and lunch breaks and time to draw fashion ideas, work on hair/makeup designs and accessory choices for the fashion show. Student must have previous sewing class or instruction on the machine and need to be able to thread their machines independently.

Painting Camp

Dates: July 24th-28th

Students will be introduced to painting with tempera, watercolor and acrylic paints using brushes, and various other unconventional tools and techniques to create abstract and realistic paintings. Full day children need to bring a lunch and an afternoon movie will help break up the day. Children will be divided into two age groups for art activities but will be together for lunch.

Each individual class will begin with light stretches (butterfly, hamstrings, etc.) and then move to the barre where we will work on mastering the five ballet positions. We will then move to the center of the floor and continue working on these positions. We will next practice ballet walks, skips, simple turns, and leaps across the floor.

We will finish off the class with a rehearsal of the dance and more light stretching. Each camp will have a Wednesday performance every two weeks that the instructor will choreograph in conjunction with the students. This performance will take place as part of the regularly scheduled class, and parents will be invited to observe.

About the Workshop:

This popular two-week long workshop is focused on the development of performance skills in music theatre and includes exercises in singing, acting, and movement. There will be two sections of the camp for different age groups.

Julia Aubrey, Director of the Ford Center for the Performing Arts & UM Opera Theatre, and Dr. Robert Aubrey, Instructional Assistant Professor of Music Education bring a wealth of experience to the Youth Music Theatre Workshop.  This husband and wife team has collaborated on children’s theatre, university and professional opera and musical theatre productions for over thirty years.  Since its inception in 1996, the Youth Music Theatre Workshop has provided performance opportunities for children in Oxford and surrounding areas in musical theatre, operetta, and original works. Previous productions included preparing the seven children in The Sound of Music for the 2012 Oxford Shakespeare Festival.
