Join us to learn how to design and care for your own miniature work of art: bonsai! During the ‘Bonsai Essentials’ class we will cover everything from watering to wiring. You will learn the nuances of design fundamentals and aesthetics of container selection to finish your tree with just the right personal touch. We will also make sure you know how to care for you tree during seasons of growth, and how to help it thrive through the winter.
Each student will select a tree to design and take home. Supplies will be provided for use during the workshop, including pruners, turntables, and training wire.
Each student will also receive a design fundamentals “cheat sheet” with a styling guide, quick-reference bonsai vocab, and room for some notes or design sketches. Remember, this is for beginners, and there is no previous knowledge of bonsai or horticulture required, although some hand strength and dexterity is necessary.
This class is taught by a certified bonsai professional with over a dozen years of experience. It is the perfect introduction to the art of bonsai, whether you have been wanting to get into it for years or only recently heard about it. After a brief demonstration and an introduction to principles of bonsai design, the instructor will consult with each student on envisioning and executing the styling of their own tree.
The small class size allows time for individual attention; this class is suited for novice and advanced beginners, as one-on-one time allows the instructor to cater to varying abilities. Learning will occur in a relaxed environment, highlighting collaboration with the instructor and class members. Everyone has their own interpretation and experience with nature, and this will be a great way to learn with and about each other in a unique way.

About the Instructor: Zach Adamz is owner and executive artist at Komorebi Bonsai. He has studied bonsai with artists across the United States and around the world for over a decade. In 2019 he studied at the National Bonsai Museum in Seoul, South Korea, where he qualified as a bonsai master, and soon after returning established Komorebi Bonsai. Since locating to Oxford a few years ago, Zach has integrated bonsai into his new home, establishing the Magnolia State Bonsai Club (MSBC) in 2023.His aesthetic inspiration for bonsai comes from growing up in the east Tennessee woodlands of Appalachia, and his subject matter highlights native species of the American South. He has almost two decades of teaching at various levels (from children to children-at-heart) in a variety of subjects ranging from bonsai to the Bolshevik Revolution, but bonsai is his favorite!
